			CNSS Composite Catalog Format

                            CNSS Ver 1.0

The full catalog format described here is an ascii-format, column-oriented,
file.  For each event, a number of lines may be used to describe the event.
Unfilled values in the catalog will be indicated by blank entries and a
single blank will separate entries within a line.

Each line begins with a field that tags its function.  Some fields are
followed by secondary tags (c.f., $add, $com lines) that define the
format of the information on that line. The following lines are allowed
and defined in more detail below:

$fmt  - format definition.
$beg	- beginning of event group.
$loc		- location information.
$add$loc	- optional additional information for preceeding location.
$mec		- focal mechanism.
$add$typ	- optional additional information for preceeding mechanism.
$mag		- magnitude information.
$add$typ	- optional additional information for preceeding magnitude.
$pic		- phase arrival time.
$add$pic	- optional additional information for preceeding phase.
$amp		- phase amplitude and coda data.
$com$typ	- comment line  for $typ, where typ=net or rem
$end	- end of event group

Multiple entries of the various lines are allowed.  For example, multiple
location, magnitude, and mechanism lines may be given for the same event.
When multiple entries are given, the "preferred" entry must be designated
with "P".  For events with a single location, mangitude, or mechanism line,
the "P" flag is not required to be set.

In general, the order of the lines does not matter, with the exception
of the $add lines.  These lines must follow the data they modify.
The required lines for an event are:
	$beg

	$end

The $pic and $amp structures utilize the $add structures to separate
the "raw" information from the derived parameters.  The derived
parameters (such as distance, azimuth, travel time residual) will be
stored on the $add line and must be defined with respect to the
preferred location and/or appropriate magnitude.

Required entries are indicated with "*".  Character strings are
defined to be left-justified and numbers are defined to be right
justified unless otherwise stated.

		CNSS Unified Single Line Catalog Format

In order to form a reduced catalog (with a single entry per event), the
preferred $loc, preferred $mag, and $add$loc lines are concatenated
together with a single space between each original line. For the CNSS
Unified catalog, only the preferred $loc and $mag lines will be used.
This "reduced" catalog will be used for rapid event searches.
